I think we've reached the mature state of the curve. It's not a bad thing that not everyone is blogging, or that people are choosier about reading blogs.

Also, all that junk flooding the internet did some good in helping us all develop better filtering techniques. Google's algorithms have become finely tuned to ignore spammers or those who use blackhat techniques to cheat themselves to the top. And we've all developed ways of scanning through and finding what we do and don't want among all the choices.

Jeff, I love this article. Back in the early eighties, I went on a tour of Cape Canaveral with my grandparents. The shuttle was sitting on the platform and our initial schedule was set so we could watch the launch, but as those things go it was not to be. I was awed, then (as a pre-teen) by the scale of the operation... something I hadn't considered only watching coverage on TV. I was around my son's age when the shuttle program started. It's a very different world now, and I wonder how much farther the next 30 years will take us. Thanks for sharing. -Rich

I just wrote about this subject on my blog and a friend mentioned King as a great example. Your post came up in my first search for her platform. What an incredible example for other authors to follow.
Here is my post: http://bit.ly/c3rlHy

Sure, learning from your successes makes a lot of sense, but Bogusky's never learned anything from his mistakes? Sounds bogus-ky to me.

Jeff, thank you for the mention of the fan fiction contest along with the link to the site. The voting has started on the eleven entries and the winner will be announced on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Letters_Of_Mary and on Ms King's Mutterings on April 29th.

The Letters of Mary Yahoo group is the premier location for Russell/Holmes fan fiction based on the novels by Laurie R King.

I used to be a big fan of John D. MacDonald. While at the Florida shore I read that while the mystery novelist set his Travis McGee novels in Lauderdale, he lived west of Sarasota on Siesta Key. During the visit I saw what most people see near the coast--sea gulls. I imagined I kept seeing the same gull, and that he was up to no good.
